The leadership of Uganda peoples Congress, an opposition political party have called on government security agencies including the general public, to ensure maximum vigilance and security during the commemoration of Uganda Martyrs day in Namugongo slated for 3rd June.
Addressing members of the press at the party headquarters in Kampala, the spokesperson of the party Arach Oyat Sharon noted that the kind of sacrifice, commitment and determination exercised by the pilgrims by walking such long distances, is a symbolic of our readiness to renew our faith in God.
She however, tasked the general public, Uganda Police Force and all sister security agencies to ensure safety of the pilgrims while on their way including the main celebration venues in Namugongo. “This day is falling at a time when the Capital City is registering several crime cases of different magnitudes. This demands for total cooperation of all stakeholders..” She said
Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations in Namugongo occur every 3rd of June. Pilgrims gather in Namugongo to remember the heroic Ugandans who died for their faith in God during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda Kingdom.
It’s anticipated that about 1.3 million pilgrims are expected to attend this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations compared to 1.2 million that attended the previous year.
