Torture Suspects captured on Video Arrested, Charged

Kampala, Uganda – Two security guards have been arrested and charged with aggravated torture after a disturbing video circulated on social media, showing them brutally assaulting an 18-year-old boy.

According to the deputy spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan police Luke Owoyesigyire, suspects Opanya Darius and Azabo Samuel were taken into custody after a thorough investigation into the February 3rd incident.

The victim Kitooke Isaac, 18 years was allegedly confined and beaten with a long stick by the suspects while they were guarding a building under construction along Nakivubo in Kampala city.

The police clarified that contrary to some reports, Opanya Darius, who was referred to as “Commander Ivan” by the victim, is not a police officer but a local guard. Azabo Samuel is believed to have recorded the video.

The suspects have confessed to the crime and have been charged with aggravated torture. The police have also cautioned local security guards and bouncers against wearing attire resembling police uniforms, warning that it may lead to prosecution.

The victim has been issued a Police Form 3 for a medical check-up. The police have commended the public for their vigilance in reporting the incident and have assured that justice will be served.

The incident highlights the darker side of security guarding and the need for greater oversight and accountability in the industry. The police have vowed to continue investigating such incidents and ensuring that those responsible are brought to book.
