Ministry of Internal Affairs Takes Control of NGO Bureau

Kampala Uganda – The Ugandan government has officially dissolved the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Bureau, reverting its functions back to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to the spokesperson of the ministry of internal affairs Simon Peter Mundeyi, the move is part of the rationalisation efforts by the government, which aims at streamlining and increasing efficiency in service delivery.

“As i talk the NGO Bureau as a semi autonomous entity has been dissolved. On 27th September 2024, the Minister of internal affairs Maj.Gen R.t Kahinda Otafiire appended his signature on the statutory instrument number 73 of 2024, Officially dissolving the NGO Bureau as a semi autonomous entity.” Mundeyi said

Mundeyi highlighted that the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Bureau has already been established as a department within their Ministry, giving them the powers to monitor, oversee and regulate all the non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations.

“The Bureau is now a department and it’s supervised by a commissioner who reports directly to the ministry’s permanent secretary” he said

He also outlined that the key implications include;Centralised control, increased scrutiny and alignment with government priorities

“The Bureau’s office remains at Kingdom Kampala building for now, and any changes will be communicated in due course,” Mundeyi said

Mundeyi further disclosed that a staff of 12 new members has already been appointed following the just concluded interviews by the ministry of public service and these include;

The newly appointed staff members include;

-Okello Stephen – Commissioner for the department of NGO Management

-Mrs Oundo Martha – Assistant Commissioner, inspection and compliance

-Mrs. Mugisha Joseph – Principal Registration Officer

-Nachom Sofia – Principal Monitoring and evaluation officer

-Mukisa Ronald – Senior Registration Officer

-Mrs Oyul Brenda – Senior Registration Officer among others

He however, clarified that those that aren’t listed are not staff members of the bureau.
