Kampala, Uganda – Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, has called for a government policy to incentivize investors who maximize value addition to Ugandan raw materials.

Tayebwa made the remarks during a tour of Tembo Steels Mills LTD’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and Scrap to Electric Furnace system in Iganga Municipality. The innovative technology reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 70%.

According to Tayebwa, their main goal as leaders of Parliament is to prioritise business driven funding through legislation. “Manufacturers who use Ugandan raw materials should be supported to pay a certain Percentage, while importers should be charged import duty.” he emphasized

For Uganda’s iron ore industry to thrive, Tayebwa suggested government facilitation of mining licenses and collaboration with NEMA to ensure environmentally responsible practices.

“Climate change is critical for our country,” Tayebwa stressed

This policy aims to promote economic growth, reduce reliance on imports, and mitigate environmental impacts.
