Kampala, Uganda – In the wake of yesterday’s devastating fuel tanker explosion that claimed 11 lives in Kigogwa – Kasangati, Bombo road, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has cautioned the general public to prioritize their safety in such tragic incidents.
The fuel tanker vehicle, registration number UAM 292Q, was traveling from Kampala to Gulu when it overturned and caught fire. “Unfortunately, people who rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker were the most affected,” KMP spokesperson SSP Onyango said yesterday in a statement
Addressing journalists today inregads to the tragic incident, UPC spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon condemned the incident saying, “The area of the accident was supposed to be cordoned off immediately, and local leadership and police should have restrained people from approaching the scene,”
She however, urged citizens to exercise extreme caution when encountering accidents involving hazardous materials, such as fuel tankers. She warned that approaching or attempting to loot a damaged tanker can be catastrophic, resulting in loss of life and severe injuries like it happened.
Furthermore, she called for an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future. The party also wants the government to provide enhanced treatment for those injured due to fire burns, ensuring they receive the best possible care.
UPC also called for decent burials for the deceased, providing dignity and respect to their families. “UPC sends heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their beloved ones in the terrible incident and wishes quick recovery to those nursing wounds in the different health facilities.” Arach highlighted
Additionally, the party is pushing for compensation and financial assistance to support affected families and individuals.
