Washington–  President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will end his presidential re-election campaign, bringing an abrupt and humbling conclusion to his half-century-long political career and scrambling the race for the White House just four months before Election Day.

He says his decision “is in the best interest of my party and the country” – but will stay on for the final six months of his term.

Biden, 81, could not reverse growing sentiment within his party that he was too frail to serve and destined to lose to Donald Trump in November.

Biden has endorsed Kamala Harris, the current vice-president, to be the new Democratic nominee

Biden’s decision comes four months before Americans go to the polls on 5 November.

Biden, 81, had faced increasing calls to step aside after a faltering debate performance against Republican candidate Donald Trump in June

According to inside sources Biden, has pledged to address the nation “later this week in more detail about his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
