Censure Motion in Disarray as Legal Threats & Signature Withdrawals Rock Parliament

Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Asuman Basalirwa has vowed to move in and challenge censure motion

PARLIAMENT|In a dramatic turn of events, the censure motion against four commissioners has hit a snag as Bugiri Municipality MP, Asuma Basalirwa, threatens to take legal action against the motion’s proponents. Basalirwa claims that the motion is a contempt of court since the matters being discussed are still pending in court.

“The censure motion is a clear contempt of court. I have received instructions from one of the affected commissioners, Solomon Silwanyi, to challenge the motion in court,” Basalirwa said.

Meanwhile, another MP, Veronica Nanyondo, has written to the Speaker of Parliament seeking to withdraw her signature from the motion. Nanyondo claims she was misled into signing the motion, which she thought was an attendance list.

“I didn’t know I was signing a censure motion. I thought it was an attendance list,” Nanyondo said.

However, Theodore Ssekikubo, the MP behind the censure motion, has dismissed Nanyondo’s claims, saying she is part of a larger scheme to derail the censure process.

“Nanyondo’s move is unfortunate and part of the drama that censure motions in Parliament are known for. She came to sign the censure motion, and she appended her signature on the piece of paper that had the motion. You can’t tell me she came to sign an attendance list on a meeting she wasn’t part of,” Ssekikubo said.

The censure motion has faced numerous challenges, with some MPs expressing surprise at Nanyondo’s decision to withdraw her signature.

“It is a surprise to me, and it is very unfortunate that she has come out to withdraw her signature after the censure motion. We were in Cabinet, and Cabinet is for Cabinet members, not any other member,” said MP Nsubuga Balimwezo.

The drama surrounding the censure motion has left many wondering if it will ever come to fruition.
