Detroit, Michigan – In a surprise appearance, renowned rapper Eminem joined former President Barack Obama at a Kamala Harris campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan, where he publicly endorsed the Vice President.
Eminem said, “Going into this election, the spotlight is on us more than ever and I think it’s important to use your voice. I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country, where this freedom and many others will be protected and upheld.”
Obama hit the stage and admitted he was a little nervous following in the footsteps of the iconic Detroit rapper. The former president even rapped a cappella to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” anthem, which was also his walkout music.
“I got to say, you know I have done a lot of rallies, so I don’t usually get nervous. But I was feeling some kind of way following Eminem. Now I notice, my palms are sweating, knees weak, arms are heavy, vomit on my sweater already, mom’s spaghetti. I’m nervous but on the surface I look calm and ready to drop bombs but I keep on forgetting. Love me some Eminem.” Said Obama
Eminem has acknowledged some of his fanbase and Trump’s supporters, namely white working class Americans may overlap, but the rapper has said he doesn’t care if he loses fans over his anti-Trump stance.
The move hyped up the Detroit crowd, although Obama’s long been a fan of Slim Shady. He revealed in a 2020 interview that “Lose Yourself” was one of the tracks that served as inspiration while he was on the presidential campaign trail in 2008.
“When I needed some inspiration on the presidential campaign I often turned to music. It was rap that got my head in the right place, two songs especially.” Obama highlighted
Eminem’s endorsement is consistent with his history of supporting Democratic candidates. In 2020, he backed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, even permitting the use of his iconic song “Lose Yourself” for their campaign.
Eminem’s reported appearance comes days after singer Lizzo, also a Detroit native, spoke at a Harris rally in the city on Saturday, in which she slammed Trump’s claim that Harris would make the whole country “like Detroit,” praising the city as proud and resilient.
