Kampala, Uganda – The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has taken swift action against M/s Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd for illegal construction on the Jugula Channel at Plots 26 and 28, Nakivubo.
Despite receiving a stop-order on November 1, 2024, the company continued construction without necessary permits, prompting KCCA to intervene.
KCCA highlighted in a statement yesterday, “The order also required the company to restore the drainage channel within seven days.”
According to Kampala Capital City Authority, the illegal construction has caused significant flooding at St. Balikuddembe Market (Owino), resulting in severe inconvenience and financial losses for vendors.
KCCA emphasizes that the developer’s 2017 approved building plans have expired and do not permit development on a drainage channel.
“it should be noted that such approvals having expired, as outlined in Section 38 of the Building Control Act, 2013, did not permit the company to do development on a drainage channel.” KCCA said in an official statement yesterday
Owino Market is considered to be a cornerstone of Kampala’s economic activity, providing livelihoods to thousands of traders and serving as a hub for poverty alleviation.
KCCA reaffirms its commitment to enforcing urban planning and development control laws to safeguard public safety and promote sustainable development.
The authority urges the public to report any instances of illegal construction or vandalism of city infrastructure.
