Kampala, Uganda – In a dramatic rescue operation, Interpol Uganda has secured the release of Kumesh Menaria, an Indian chef who was kidnapped in Switzerland and smuggled to Tanzania.
Menaria, who had been missing for two months, was allegedly abducted by suspects linked to his employee, Pankaj Oswal. He was then brought to Uganda and smuggled across the Mutukula border into Tanzania, where he was detained at Shaka Police Station.
According to SCP Joseph Obwona, Acting Director of Interpol and International Relations, Menaria has provided a detailed statement about his ordeal and is currently receiving assistance.
Three suspects, including Basundhara Oswal, daughter of Pankaj Oswal, and their lawyer Rita Ngabire, have been arrested and charged with kidnapping with intent to kill. They have been remanded in custody.
“Interpol Uganda is working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian Embassy to facilitate Menaria’s repatriation to his home country,” Obwona said.
He however, noted that the victim will have the opportunity to choose his country of repatriation, as advised by foreign affairs officials.
Menaria’s health has significantly improved after being rescued, having previously suffered from poor nutrition and living conditions during his confinement.
The owner of the Oswal company, believed to be involved in the kidnapping, remains at large and is currently out of the country.
