Mityana Court Remands 3 Teachers Over UNEB Exam Malpractice

The 3 teachers appearing today before the Mityana Grade 1 magistrate Court

Mityana, Uganda – Mityana Grade 1 magistrate Court has remanded 3 teachers from Mityana to Namukozi prison until October 29, 2024, for allegedly possessing unauthorized examination materials.

Onyoto Thomas, Sekiranda David, and Kambugu Livingstone were arrested during last week’s Chemistry Practical paper for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) New Curriculum examinations.

The trio was found by a UNEB scout with a copy of the chemistry examination paper inside the laboratory where preparations for the Chemistry Practical were underway, violating Section 25 of the UNEB Act, Cap 259.

Jennifer Kalule, Principal Public Relations Officer of UNEB emphasized, “UNEB’s theme for 2024, ‘Embracing security and holistic assessment of learners in a dynamic environment,’ reflects our commitment to maintaining examination integrity. We will not tolerate any actions that compromise this goal.”

The teachers pleaded not guilty to the charges and applied for bail, which was denied by Chief Magistrate Her Worship Wakooli Grace due to insufficient sureties. “The state Attorney therefore requested for more time to validate the credentials of the sureties.” Said Kalule

Section 25 (1) of the UNEB Act states that anyone found guilty of examination malpractice faces a fine of up to 1,000 currency points (approximately UGX 10 million) or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

UNEB continues to implement measures to prevent malpractice, including scouting and surveillance.
