South African National Rescued from Kidnappers in Makindye

Kampala, Uganda – A harrowing kidnapping ordeal ended in relief on August 1, 2024, when a team of Flying Squad officers rescued a 40-year-old South African national, Mr. Amos Masoga Morubura, from his captors in the Bandogo zone, Makindye Division, Kampala District.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the victim arrived in the country in May this year and has been staying with friends, where he alleges that he had confrontation with a Ugandan friend Peter mulondo and his accomplice Elijah over unauthorised withdraw of cash from his bank account.

“This confrontation allegedly angered the duo, who then kidnapped him as he was heading to the airport on the 31st of July 2024 around Munyonyo area.” Owoyesigyire said

His kidnappers, allegedly including a Ugandan friend, Peter Mulondo, and his accomplice, Elijah tied and subjected him to torture and demanded a ransom of 100,000 South African Rand from his brother in South Africa.

Owoyesigyire highlighted that the brother’s desperate plea for help on a social media video reached them, leading to a swift response from the Flying Squad team which contacted the victim’s brother for more details hence his rescue on 1st August.

“Mr. Morubura was subsequently traced to a house in Bandogo, where he was found tied up and showing signs of torture. He was then brought to Katwe Police Station, where his statement was taken.” He said

Owoyesigyire however, noted that the suspects are currently on the run, where they will be traced and prosecuted.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police also commended the team of Flying Squad officers who responded and successfully rescued the victim.”We will provide more information as it becomes available.”he said
