Speaker’s Words Misinterpreted in Viral video, Says Chris Obore

Speaker of the 11th parliament R.t Honourable Anita Among

Kampala, Uganda – A video circulating online has sparked controversy, allegedly showing Speaker of Parliament Anita Among consulting with the Clerk of Parliament on the National Coffee (Amendment) Bill, 2024. However, the Speaker’s office has swiftly responded, dismissing attempts to misinterpret her words.

According to Chris Obore, Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Uganda Parliament, the video does not capture the Speaker’s full statement, and some individuals are trying to complete her sentences based on their own biases. “That characterisation is rejected as a poor attempt at using artificial intelligence to score political goals.” Chris Obore stated in the media statement

The controversy surrounds allegations that the National Coffee (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is “poison served by the government to the people of Buganda.” However, Speaker Among has urged lawmakers not to attach tribal sentiments to the bill, emphasizing that coffee is a significant cash crop in multiple regions, including Bugisu.

“The Speaker enjoys an intentional and respectful relationship with the people and the leadership of Buganda, which is why an hour before the sitting. she met and consulted with the Buganda Parliamentary CaucUs on the Bill.” Obore highlighted in a media statement released today.

He further said, “She (speaker) urges Hon. Members to debate and mobilise for or against the Bill without tribal lenses.”

With the clarification, Ugandans have been urged to now focus on the substance of the National Coffee (Amendment) Bill, 2024, rather than misinformation.
