Toddler Dies in Suspected Arson Attack in Nabweru

Wakiso, Uganda – A devastating fire incident in Kaayi Zone, Nabweru Division, Wakiso District, has left the community in shock after a one-year-old boy lost his life in a suspected arson attack. The tragic incident occurred on August 1, 2024, at approximately 11:00 PM, at the home of Ikwaru Martin, a 28-year-old Army officer.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer, Kampala Metropolitan Police, the fire resulted in the death of Onam Emmanuel, the one-year-old son of Ikwaru Martin, due to suspected suffocation and burns. “Another child, Anorwoth Elizabeth, a three-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kirudu Hospital.” Luke said

Police say the father of the victims Ikwaru Martin, discovered the fire at around 11:45 PM when he and his new wife stepped out to take a shower and noticed flames coming from the house.

“Upon rushing inside, he found his bedroom ablaze. Although he managed to rescue his children, Onam Emmanuel was tragically confirmed dead at the scene due to suspected suffocation and burns.” He stated

Owoyesigyire outlined that the Territorial Police in Kawempe, along with experts from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, responded promptly and extinguished the fire.

“During the investigation, crime scene investigators recovered a matchbox and a small plastic container suspected to contain kerosene. These items have been submitted for forensic analysis.”

The police have arrested Adu Deborah, 25, the ex-wife of Ikwaru Martin, whom he separated from a week ago, to aid in the ongoing investigation.

“We strongly condemn any act of violence that leads to the death and injury of innocent individuals and are committed to thoroughly investigating this matter to determine the exact cause of the fire. Further details will be provided as they become available.” said ASP Owoyesigyire.
