Uganda Police Halts NUP Mobilization Tours Citing Violations

National Unity Platform during mobilization campaigns in Buikwe

Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force has suspended the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) countrywide mobilization tours, citing violations of agreed-upon guidelines and disregard for traffic regulations and public order.

The decision comes after the National Unity Platform allegedly reneged on their agreement, leading to chaos during their processions in Buikwe district on November 14, 2024.

According to Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the police had previously engaged with the NUP in multiple meetings to establish guidelines for the mobilization tours.

“As mandated by law therefore, to preserve public order, the UPF halts the NUP countrywide mobilization tours until such a time when the rule of law can be respected.” Kituuma said

He highlighted that their engagements are aimed at ensuring that NUP’s activities respect law and order, citizens’ private businesses, travels, personal and public liberties.

“This has come as a result of the failure and/or neglect by NUP to adhere to the mutually agreed upon guidelines, traffic regulations and public order.” He said

Reasons for Halting the Tours:

– Violation of agreed-upon guidelines

– Disregard for traffic regulations and public order

– Obstruction of roads during processions

This isn’t the first time the police have stopped the NUP’s mobilization tours. In May 2024, the police halted the tours following a tragic accident at Maya along the Kampala-Masaka Highway, which resulted in three fatalities.

The police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining public order and safety, and will only allow the NUP to resume their tours when the rule of law is respected.
