Nairobi, Kenya – In a shocking and devastating turn of events, Ugandan distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has passed away due to injuries sustained in a horrific arson attack by her boyfriend.
Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the 2024 Paris Olympics, was set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a disagreement at their home in Trans Nzoia County, western Kenya. The brutal attack left Cheptegei with severe burns covering 75% of her body.
Cheptegei’s attacker, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, was also injured by the flames, both victims have been receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City, Kenya.
However, according to the Uganda Athletics Federation, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning. The federation expressed deep sadness and condemned the act of domestic violence, calling for justice.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the federation said in a statement on X handle
The incident has sent shockwaves through the athletics community, with many calling for action against domestic violence. An investigation into the attack is underway.
