Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) has strongly condemned the police’s actions in the tragic incident that left National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, injured in Bulindo, Kira Town Council, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
Speaking at their weekly media address today, the party spokesperson Sharon Oyat Arach expressed the party’s regret over the scuffle between Hon. Kyagulanyi’s supporters and the Uganda Police Force (UPF), which resulted in the opposition leader’s injury.
The party called on the police to exercise restraint and avoid high-handedness when managing crowds, especially as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.
She however, reiterated her party’s commitment of ensuring peace and safety during the electoral process. “As we come closer to 2026 general elections, UPC reiterates its position that let all stakeholders (Electoral Commission, Security Agencies, Civil Society, Political Parties, Politicians and the public) ensure peace and safety of our people before, during and after elections.” She emphasized
The party also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, calling on the police to take responsibility for their actions and ensure accountability. “Police is requested to do a thorough investigation into the incident.” Arach said
The UPC’s statement comes amid growing tensions between opposition parties and the government ahead of the 2026 elections.
