Mbale, Uganda – Uganda joined the global community on July 31st, 2024, in commemorating World Rangers Day, a day set aside to honor the brave men and women who have lost their lives protecting the country’s natural heritage.
Speaking at the commemoration event, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Amanya, Chief Warden of the Mt. Elgon Conservation Area, highlighted the challenges faced by rangers, including threats from poachers and conflicts with local communities, which sometimes result in fatalities.
Lt. Col. Amanya emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring those who have died in service to nature, and pledged Uganda’s commitment to conserving 30% of its land by 2030. This includes preserving forests, national parks, wildlife reserves, and wetlands.
To mark the occasion, tree planting activities were held in Mbale City, with Lt. Col. Amanya urging Ugandans to commit to conservation efforts.
The global theme for this year’s World Rangers Day is “Celebrating 30 by 30,” emphasizing the international commitment to conserving 30% of the world’s land by 2030.
By commemorating World Rangers Day, Uganda recognizes the crucial role that rangers play in protecting the country’s natural resources and pledges to continue supporting their efforts.
