Kampala, Uganda – Between July 22 and July 25, 2024, Ugandan security operatives cracked down on anti-corruption protesters, arresting dozens who attempted to march into the Parliament of Uganda. The protesters were demanding for an end to rampant corruption among their legislators, with some calling for the speaker’s resignation.
According to the police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, the arrests were made over a four-day period, with the majority of those detained being taken to court.
On July 22, nine individuals were arrested and charged with common nuisance and traffic regulation violations. The following day, 75 suspects were apprehended, with 74 being taken to court and one remaining in police custody.
On July 24, three individuals were arrested and charged with common nuisance offenses, all of whom were taken to court. The next day, 16 people were arrested, with 13 being taken to court and three still in police custody.
“Overall, 104 individuals have been arrested during this period, with 100 already taken to court. Among those arrested, 13 had prior criminal charges.” Said Rusoke
The demonstrations, which took place from July 22 to July 25, were met with significant police intervention, resulting in the arrests of the above individuals.
