Kampala, Uganda – Uganda will join the international community on Monday, October 7, 2024, to commemorate World Habitat Day, with a focus on engaging youth to create a better urban future.
The celebrations, to be held at Kamwokya Tresor Life Centre (KTLC) in Kampala, are organized jointly by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and Habitat for Humanity Uganda, in partnership with key stakeholders that include; UN-Habitat, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Kampala City Council Authority, Makerere University, and other partners.
According to the state Minister of Land, Housing and Urban Development Hon. Persis Namuganza, the day provides countries, communities and all stakeholders in the housing sector an opportunity to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic human right to adequate shelter. “It is also a reminder to the world of its collective responsibility to the future of the human habitat.” She emphasized in a statement
“This year’s theme, ‘Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future,’ which the minister says recognizes the critical role young people play in shaping the future of our cities.
She outlined that this year’s theme ‘Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future,’ rallies the governments and stakeholders to highlight the important role of the youth in creating a better urban future.
She further disclosed that, It’s estimated that by the year 2030, 60 percent of the urban residents in the world will be under the age of 18 hence the need to tap into the energy of the young people to turn urban challenges into opportunities.
Namuganza also revealed some of the activities that will feature at the event which include:-
Public Rally: Open to all members of the public, where stakeholders will discuss the importance of youth engagement in urban development.
Awareness March: Through Kamwokya Informal Settlement, in collaboration with residents and local leaders, to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing and improved living conditions.
Community Service Projects: Community service organized by the residents and youths from the HFHU partners including Nation Media Group, Rotary International, Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and technology, Rainbow International School, Taibah International School among others.
Youth Presentations and Entertainment: Showcasing talents, ideas, and innovative solutions for urban challenges.
Exhibition: Featuring items made by “Mothers in Need” young women, who have received training and support from Habitat for Humanity Uganda.
All stakeholders in the housing and urban development sector, as well as the general public, are invited to attend and participate in the event.
World Habitat Day, designated by the UN General Assembly in 1985, aims to raise awareness about the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter.
