Kampala, Uganda – The Kampala Metropolitan Police temporarily closed down China Town Super Store on September 4, 2024, citing overwhelming crowds and inadequate security measures.
According to eyewitnesses, the store was packed with over 3,000 customers, with only one entry and exit point, creating a potential security risk. “The situation was chaotic, with people pushing and shoving to get into the store,” said one customer.
SSP Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, explained that the private security guards deployed by management were insufficient to handle the large number of customers, creating a security gap. “Police had to temporarily close the place to avoid stampede in case of any emergency.” Onyango said.
The police advised customers to leave the premises until further notice, sparking frustration among shoppers. “I came all the way from Kireka to buy some goods, only to be told to leave,” said one of the disappointed customer.
Onyango revealed that in a meeting with store management on September 3, 2024, police had agreed on measures to improve security, including proper entry and exit procedures. However, most of these measures had not been implemented by the time of the police visit on September 4 hence calling for its closure.
He further emphasized the importance of prioritizing customer safety and security, particularly in crowded areas vulnerable to terror threats. “A congested place like that always attracts terror threats, Police advised the management to have officers from Counter Terrorism in place to deter threats of terrorism.” Onyango highlighted
“Today, they had not put in most of the measures they agreed in the security meeting and Police had to advise their clients to go away.” He stated
The store will remain closed until management addresses these security concerns.
