Kampala, Uganda – A devastating fuel tanker explosion occurred today in Kigogwa Town along the Kampala-Bombo road, claiming the lives of 11 people, including two minors.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, the fuel tanker, registration number UAM 292Q, was traveling from Kampala to Gulu when it overturned and caught fire.
“Unfortunately, people who rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker were the most affected,” SSP Onyango said.
The blaze destroyed four buildings housing nine shops, resulting in millions of shillings in property losses. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. “The identities of those affected have not yet been established.” Said Onyango
Police are conducting a fact-finding mission to confirm the number of injured persons and establish the identities of those affected.
SSP Onyango urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with hazardous materials and to avoid rushing to accident scenes to siphon fuel.
“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with fuel tanker accidents and the importance of exercising caution when dealing with hazardous materials. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.” He said
