Kyambogo Varsity To Host East African Conference On Disabilities

Kampala, Uganda – Kyambogo University is taking a significant step towards promoting disability inclusion in higher education by hosting the 1st East African Conference on Disability Inclusive Higher Education.

The conference, which runs from November 13 to 14, 2024, aims to address the gap in inclusive education advocacy and disability research in higher education.

The conference will be preceded by a dinner on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz, with the deputy speaker of the 11th parliament R.t Hon. Thomas Tayebwa expected to be the chief guest.

According to Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, emphasized the institution’s commitment to providing a conducive environment to students with disabilities in the country.

“Kyambogo University is the first choice higher education institution in Uganda for persons with disabilities. The university currently enrolls 241 students with different disabilities, across its 12 schools and faculties.”

He added, “We have a long-standing track record of offering unique programmes tailored to harness disability inclusion, social justice, equity, and lifelong learning for vulnerable groups.”

He also outlined that, during the recent restructuring of public universities, Kyambogo University deliberately provided in its staffing establishment, positions for specialized personnel such as Technicians for assistive technology, sign language interpretation and personal assistant services.

“The Disability Resource Center coordinates the specialized personnel to ensure that every staff and student with disability at our University receives the unique Reasonable Accommodation they require to participate in teaching and learning, and/or to perform their jobs at an equal basis with other staff and students without disabilities.” He explained

Prof. Katunguka highlighted that the conference will explore innovative strategies for accessible and inclusive higher education for all, with renowned academics and practitioners sharing their insights and experiences.

“Emerging scholars as well as students and staff with disabilities will share their insights and lived experiences disability inclusion or exclusion in higher education institutions.” Said Prof. Katunguka

By hosting the conference, Professor Katunguka seeks to elevate disability awareness, promote inclusive practices, and ensure universities and higher education institutions provide comprehensive support for students with disabilities.

The event is also expected to attract participants from East Africa and beyond, providing a platform for networking, advocacy, and knowledge sharing. The First Lady and Minister of Education and sports, Janet Kataha Museveni will be the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony.
