Kampala, Uganda – Kampala metropolitan police have successfully rescued a 2-year-old child Ayan who was kidnapped two days ago. The suspect, Kato Geofrey, was apprehended today in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District.
According to the deputy spokesperson of Kampala metropolitan police Luke Owoyesigyire, Geofrey (Suspect) tricked the child’s mother, Nayakaisiki Fatumah, into inviting him to her home in Kireka-Kamuli, Kira Municipality, on October 10.
However, under the pretense of discussing personal matters, Geofrey seized the opportunity to abduct the toddler. “It is reported that while Nayakaisiki was preparing tea for the suspect, he fled the scene with the child.” Owoyesigyire highlighted
Later that evening, Geofrey sent a WhatsApp message to the mother, demanding a staggering UGX 150 million ransom for the child’s safe return.
Acting swiftly, the parents reported the incident to Kira Division Police, prompting a thorough investigation led by the Crime Intelligence Directorate.
“Today, the suspect was apprehended in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District, and 2-year-old Ayan was safely recovered. The child was found in good health and has since been reunited with their parents.” Owoyesigyire said
The suspect is currently in police custody and will be processed for arraignment in court, where he will face charges related to kidnapping.
“We commend the efforts of the task team for their diligent work in resolving this case, and we also acknowledge the parents for their prompt reporting of the incident, which significantly aided the rescue efforts.” He said
The Ugandan police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent similar incidents.
