Isingiro, Uganda – A devastating accident occurred on June 15, 2024, in Isingiro District, claiming the life of one student and injuring 24 others. The crash involved a school truck transporting 33 students and 8 teachers making a total of 41 people, heading to a zonal football and netball competition.
According to the spokesperson of traffic and road safety SP Michael Kananura, the truck was traveling at a terrible speed from Ntungu S.S.S heading to Kyezimbire S.S.S when the driver lost control and crashed at Kyeizimbate along Kamubiizi-Kikagate Road. “When the driver reached at Kyeinzibaate while on speed, failed to negotiate a sharp bend, lost control and jumped out leaving the car in motion for about 10 meters hence overturning and killing instantly one female student and injured 24 others” said Kananura
Kananura urged school heads and proprietors to desist from using trucks to transport students as they are not designed for passenger transport.
The injured victims were rushed to Mbarara Referral Hospital for medical attention, while the body of the deceased student was taken to Mbarara Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Kananura further appealed to schools to prioritize the safety of their students by using authorized transport vehicles. “We will continue to educate and enforce traffic safety regulations to prevent such tragedies,” he said.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and safety measures to protect the lives of students and all road users.
