Kampala, Uganda – In unexpected move, the Speaker of the 11th parliament R.t Hon. Anita Among has suspended plenary sittings for this week, citing urgent parliamentary business.
The decision comes on the heels of a protest by a group of youths who took to the streets of Kampala on Tuesday, demanding the Speaker’s resignation over corruption allegations against Parliament.
The notice, sent to all Members of Parliament, did not provide specific reasons for the postponement, leaving many wondering about the true motives behind the move. The plenary session was originally slated for an earlier date but has been rescheduled for July 30, 2024.
“The plenary has been called off until July 30th to accommodate urgent parliamentary business,” the communication stated.
The protests on Tuesday saw a group of youths call for the Speaker’s resignation amidst allegations of corruption within Parliament. The sudden suspension of plenary sittings has raised questions about the connection between the protests and the decision.
