Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy spokesperson for Kampala metropolitan police

KAMPALA|A dramatic scene unfolded at Gwanda Mall in Kampala Central on June 3rd, 2024, when a security guard shot a suspected criminal, leaving him hospitalized with a gunshot wound at approximately 6pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the security guard, identified as Kalyebi Ismail, attached to SGA, was on duty at the mall when he apprehended a suspect, Katongole, whom he believed to be a criminal. As he tried to arrest him, a struggle ensued, and the suspect overpowered the guard.

In a bid to regain control, Kalyebi allegedly pulled out his gun and shot Katongole once in the waist, disabling him. The mall was thrown into chaos as shoppers and staff scampered for safety.

The deputy spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan police Luke Owoyesigyire disclosed that the police responded swiftly to the incident, evacuating Katongole to Mulago Hospital, where he is currently admitted with a gunshot wound to the stomach. “We have also retrieved CCTV footage to help in the ongoing investigation into what exactly led to the shooting.” Luke noted

He also outlined that the suspect Kalyebi Ismail is currently on the run, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend him. “We urge the public to remain calm and report any information that may assist in the arrest of the suspect.” He said

The incident has raised questions about the use of force by security guards and the need for greater training and oversight in the industry. The police have assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Luke further revealed that as the search for Kalyebi continues, the public should come forward with any information that may aid in his arrest and the ongoing investigation.
