KM Police Deny Torture Claims Against CID Officer, Urge Victims to Come Forward

Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy spokesperson for Kampala metropolitan police

Kampala, Uganda – The Kampala Metropolitan Police have responded to allegations of torture circulating on social media against one of their officers, Superintendent of Police Ntabu Joel, the OC CID of Central Police Station.

According to Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the officer is being falsely accused of participating in the torture of suspects during recent anti-corruption demonstrations.

He explained that Superintendent Ntabu Joel’s role is to supervise CID cases and ensure that files are processed correctly, and that he does not conduct interviews or interrogations with suspects.

“We cannot rely on tweets to investigate these claims,” Owoyesigyire said. “If anyone has evidence of torture, we urge them to come forward and report it to CID headquarters or the Human Rights Commission. We will thoroughly investigate any allegations against our officer.”

Owoyesigyire also noted that Central Police Station has CCTV cameras and no special rooms for interrogating suspects, making it unlikely that torture could occur without evidence.

“We appeal to the public to stop spreading misinformation and to bring forward any evidence they may have against our officer,” Owoyesigyire said. “Our Professional Standards Unit (PSU) is ready to listen and ensure justice is served.”
