Population Hits 45.9 Million: UBOS Preliminary Census Results

UBOS Executive director and Census Commissioner, Dr. Chris Mukiza

Kampala Uganda – The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced that the country’s population has reached 45.9 million, according to preliminary results from the National Population and Housing Census 2024. The census, conducted in May 2024, was supported by the Government of Uganda (99%) and development partners (1%).

“The preliminary results indicate a total population of 45.9 million people,” said Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, Executive Director and Census Commissioner at UBOS. “We are pleased to announce that the census was successfully conducted, and we are now in the process of processing and analyzing the data.”

Dr. Mukiza emphasized that the census was a massive undertaking, with a total of 115,846 enumerators, 14,643 enumeration supervisors, and 4,713 sub-county supervisors involved in the exercise. “We trained our personnel at various levels, including Training of Trainers (TOT)-Tier one, National-Tier Two, District-Tier Three, and Sub-County level-Tier Four,” he explained.

Regarding payments to census personnel, Dr. Mukiza noted that a total of UGX 88.7 billion had been paid out through the E-Cash platform. “We have paid 98.7% of enumerators, 97.1% of field guides, 91.4% of enumeration supervisors, and 99.4% of sub-county supervisors,” he said. “We are working closely with local government officials to ensure that the pending field participants are all cleared for payment.”

The UBOS has also retrieved 99.3% of the 122,026 tablets deployed during the census and 90.2% of the 119,418 power banks. Dr. Mukiza assured that all participants would receive their entitlements directly through mobile money or bank accounts.

The final results of the census are expected to be disseminated by the end of September 2024. “We are currently processing and analyzing raw census data to the village level,” Dr. Mukiza said. “We will release the final results once the data has been thoroughly analyzed and verified.”

The UBOS has urged the public to be patient and assured that all efforts are being made to ensure that everyone involved in the census receives their entitlements.
